A fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) is an infection that affects the nails. It is caused by dermatophytes , yeasts and sometimes molds that can live in and around the nail.

What does a fungal nail infection look like? 

A fungal nail infection can cause changes to the appearance and texture of the nail, including: 

• Yellow, white or brown discolouration 

• Thickened nails (Onychauxis) 

• Brittle or crumbly nails (Onychodystrophy) 

• Nails that become distorted or change shape (Onychogryphosis) 

• The nail lifting away from the nail bed (onycholysis) 

• A build-up of debris underneath the nail (subugal detritus) 

• An unpleasant smell in some cases (malodour)  

Fungal nail infections do not always cause pain or discomfort. However, as the infection progresses, thickened or distorted nails can become uncomfortable, particularly when wearing shoes.

Other nail conditions can cause similar changes to the appearance of the nails, so it is important to have your nails assessed by a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis.

Our podiatry team specialises in foot and lower limb health. We will carry out a thorough assessment of your feet and nails, which may include a neurovascular assessment and examination of the affected nails and surrounding skin. 

Following your assessment, we will provide you with appropriate advice and support based on current NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidance and evidence-based practice. 

Treatment and advice may include: 

• Advice on appropriate antifungal treatments 

• Nail reduction or filing where appropriate to reduce nail thickness 

• Advice on foot and nail hygiene 

• Guidance on keeping your feet clean and dry 

• Advice on footwear and reducing the risk of reinfection 

• Referral or further investigation (e.g. microscopy) where required 

 

Fungal nail infections can take time to clear because toenails grow slowly. Your podiatrist will discuss the most appropriate treatment options with you and advise you on what you can expect during the treatment process.
