Running Injuries

Supporting Runners of All Levels
Whether you are training for a race or enjoy a weekend jog, running injuries can be frustrating and disruptive. Common issues include:
-
Shin splints
-
ITB syndrome
-
Achilles tendon discomfort
-
Plantar fasciitis
-
Knee pain
-
Hip or glute pain
A Combined Osteopathy and Podiatry Approach
Runners benefit enormously from having one or both professions involved in their care. Osteopaths focus on the way the body moves as a whole, while podiatrists specialise in the mechanics of the feet and lower limbs. When these two perspectives come together, we can identify the true cause of an injury and create a treatment plan that supports long term recovery.
Our collaborative approach means you receive:
-
A full body assessment from an osteopath
-
A detailed lower limb and foot assessment from a podiatrist (biomechanics appointment)
-
Shared clinical reasoning between both teams
-
A joined up treatment plan that supports your goals
-
Clear guidance on training load, footwear and technique
What we asses
Your clinicians will explore:
-
Foot and lower limb mechanics
-
Hip and pelvic movement
-
Running technique
-
Training load and recovery habits
-
Footwear suitability
-
Previous injury patterns
This helps us understand both the injury and the underlying cause.
What to expect.
How Treatment May Help
Your treatment plan is tailored to your injury, your running style and your goals. You choose your starting point, as a general rule if the pain is in the foot/ankle see the podiatry team first, if it is above the ankle see at the Osteopaths first!
Techniques may include:
Osteopathy
-
Soft tissue therapy
-
Joint mobilisation
-
Passive stretching
-
Medical acupuncture if appropriate
-
Spinal and pelvic assessment
-
Strength and stability exercises
Podiatry
-
Biomechanical assessment
-
Footwear advice
-
Taping or strapping
-
Orthotic or insole recommendations if needed
-
Running technique guidance
Together, these approaches help reduce pain, improve movement and support efficient, confident running.
When to seek medical advice
Seek urgent care if you cannot bear weight or suspect a fracture.
All our osteopaths are qualified and registered with The General Osteopathic Council after completing a 4 year degree in osteopathy.
Every osteopath has their own unique style so the way one osteopath practises will differ from clinic to clinic and practitioner to practitioner. We pride ourselves in being dedicated to finding the right treatment style for your body.
