Childhood Curly Toes
Curly toes are a common foot and toe condition where one or more toes curl or bend downwards. This can be present at birth or develop in childhood.
Curly toes can sometimes cause no symptoms, but in some people they can lead to discomfort, rubbing or pressure from footwear.
What do curly toes look like?
Curly toes can vary in appearance. You may notice:
-
One or more toes curling downwards or underneath the neighbouring toes
-
The tip of the toe pressing against the ground
-
Rubbing or pressure from footwear
-
Thickened skin developing on the toes
-
Pain or discomfort when walking or wearing certain shoes
-
Difficulty finding comfortable footwear
-

The position of the toes can sometimes change over time. Some curly toes remain flexible, while others can become more fixed or rigid.
How can podiatry help?
Our podiatry team specialises in foot and lower limb health. We will carry out a thorough assessment of your feet and toes, including looking at the position and movement of the toes, footwear and any areas of pressure or discomfort.
Following your assessment, we will provide you with appropriate advice and support based on your child’s individual needs and current evidence-based practice.
Treatment and advice may include:
-
Advice on suitable footwear
-
Padding or protective devices to reduce pressure and rubbing
-
Advice to help manage thickened skin caused by the position of the toes
-
Exercises or stretches where appropriate
-
Monitoring the position and movement of the toes over time
-
Referral to another healthcare professional if further assessment or treatment is required
Curly toes do not always require treatment, particularly if they are not causing pain or affecting your child’s ability to walk. If their toes are causing discomfort or making it difficult to wear footwear, our podiatry team can assess your feet and discuss the most appropriate options with you.

If you would like your child's foot assessed, please book a “Biomechanics Initial Appointment” with our podiatry team.
