Foot Deformities

Foot deformities describe a wide range of changes to the shape, structure or position of the feet and toes.

Some foot deformities are congenital, meaning they are present from birth. Examples include curly toes and talipes (club foot).

Other deformities are acquired, meaning they develop over time. These can occur for a variety of reasons and may include hallux valgus (bunions), adult-acquired flat feet and hammer toes.

Foot deformities can vary significantly from person to person. Some may cause no symptoms, while others can lead to pain, changes in the way you walk, difficulty finding comfortable footwear or areas of increased pressure on the feet.

Our podiatry team can assess your feet and ankles to understand how the deformity is affecting you and discuss appropriate management options based on your individual needs.

How can podiatry help?

Our podiatry team specialises in foot and lower limb health. We will carry out a thorough assessment of your feet and toes, including assessing the position and movement of your feet and ankles, your footwear, and any areas of pressure or discomfort. We will also carry out a neurovascular assessment where appropriate.

Following your assessment, we will provide personalised advice and support based on your individual needs and current evidence-based practice.

Treatment and advice may include:

  • A targeted exercise and stretching programme

  • Bespoke moulded silicone devices to fit your toes and reduce pressure on painful areas

  • Orthoses (insoles) to accommodate and offload areas affected by the toe deformity

  • Advice on suitable footwear

  • Advice on managing pressure, pain and discomfort
